January Geometry Challenge

You have the whole month of January to complete this challenge. Once you do, just post a screenshot and photo of your result here in the comments. This is the first time we've opened this to the public so you could be our first-ever World Champion!

The Geometry Challenge is a navigation-intensive exercise. Success depends on your skill, creativity, dedicated preparation, attention to detail, and performance. Results will be judged by peers in our community. We've learned a lot from doing this type of challenge ourselves and we anticipate seeing some creativity energy from all of you.

The Guidelines

  • "Draw" each shape by tracking yourself with GPS

  • Each submitted shape must be created by a single continuous effort

  • The shapes are closed so you finish where you start

  • Do not use GPS to help you, only use GPS to record

  • All other preparations, paper maps, and aids are allowed

  • Use a magnetic compass

Challenge 1 - The Parallelogram

  • Four-sided shape with opposite sides parallel and of equal length

  • Two of the sides must be 2 km

  • Two of the sides must be 1 km

Challenge 2 - The Triangle

  • Three-sided shape

  • An Equilateral Triangle has three equal sides

  • An Isosceles Triangle has two equal sides

  • Two of the sides must be 2 km

  • The third side must be between 2 km and 3 km

Judgement Criteria

  • Submit One Parallelogram and One Triangle

  • Each Shape conforms to the Specifications above

  • The Perfection of the shape is the primary factor

    • Straight lines for sides

    • Correct distances

  • Speed is not a factor

  • The uniqueness of the location and terrain is a secondary factor

Sounds like fun, huh!? Are the wheels already turning? That's a good sign. Start planning now and just make sure you have your submission in by Wednesday January 31.

  • Record your GPS track using the app of your choice: AllTrails, Strava, Garmin, RunKeeper, etc.

  • Submit two screenshots of your tracks in the comments below

    • One Screenshot of a Parallelogram

    • One Screenshot of a Triangle

  • If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: hello@owladventureracing.com

And while you are working on that, we'll be busy with The Great OWL, our 12-hour Adventure Race. If you haven't signed up yet, don't hesitate. Early registration rate ends January 31. After completing the Geometry Challenge and with a little New Year physical training, your team will be ready for some fun crushing our course on March 16. And don't forget to help us spread the word by inviting others.

I hope your Geometry plans are shaping up. Probably doing some training in parallel with this challenge.

In order to post in the comments you just have to sign-in using the button at the top of the page. If you have trouble you can always email us your results. And remember, the perimeter is more than the sum of its parts.
